Yay, Kevin is back and kicking :)

I have a bit of work to do today, but I think I will have a bit of time left for some Fruitz updates later today. Thank you all for your input in the Fruitz forums. Talking about the forum, we now got a new moderator in the Fruitz forum, as I would love to have more time for programming and updating Fruitz. All say hello to John Ramsey, better known as shanghaimac.

Fruitz update talk

As I was a bit worried about people becoming frustrated, and then mail storming me after the next version, because they lost their scores; I now tried to implement a fix for that in this beta release of Fruitz. I am not 100% sure it will work, but I tested it quite a lot, and it seems to work fine. What I need is someone which hasn’t switched to a beta version yet, to test if the scores will remain after the update. So, you brave beta tester, please let me know how it goes.

Spotting a cheater

So, I think this is really lame. There is at least one user which has “cracked” the score system, which makes me a bit sad. It is in no way secure, and pretty easy to see through if you have a bit of programming skills. In my oppinion it is just a shame. Does this really mean I have to spend hours and hours on programming secure transfers, just because we have a cheater or two among us? Well, I would love to make Fruitz itself better, and spending my time on that instead of wasting my time on the few who can’t play this thing fair.

What are your thoughts on this issue?

  1. [...] Kevin wrote an interesting post today!.Here’s a quick excerptYay, Kevin is back and kicking. 2. You have made me feel guilty now!

I wouldn’t waste your time. It is fairly obvious when someone has cheated. I only cheated as I felt the person that had beaten my high score (which took ages) had cheated.

You could also delete obviously faked scored?

  3. ps yes I know its sad :-(

  4. Hey Rustic, no bad feelings. The thing is though, I really want to spend my energy on making this widget even nicer. I don’t plan to use a lot of time on cleaning up, and replying on mails regarding people cheating. People should play fair, and have fun competing.

I will delete the scores, and keep you in the loop, ie. not ban your ip. Keep it rad mate.

    Cheers,
    Kevin

  5. An easy way to make it more difficult without actually increasing the development time would be to use a packer to obscufcate the code. eg http://dean.edwards.name/packer/

  6. sorry that crossed.

    No problem, and apologies.

    Matt

(ps not convinced that I am only one!)

  7. Thank mate, maybe I will scramble the code. I don’t know – I wouldn’t mind others getting something useful out of my code – I know I had a hard time figuring stuff out; but we will see how Fruitz evolve in the future :)

I will address the cheating aspect when I am ready to package the next final of Fruitz. But there’s quite some ground to cover before I can release it though. :)

  8. Kevin, Fruiz is Great Fun
i wish we could get it on the iphone!!
i do enjoy playing it on my mac
    thanks!!

  9. Kevin,
You could ask a security geek to review the code. Lots of us folks do that for free when we like the product. (I would, but I’m not familiar with the coding for widgets yet.) Unfortunately, widgets WILL be used for harm soon. As soon as something new comes along (like widgets), some people just have to figure out how to do bad things with the code.

  10. I have a HUGE high score, and it seems that my score from v 1.42 (when their was no limit on the amount you can bet) stayed. I’ll post it, but I didn’t cheat.

I am gettting an iPhone as soon as they come out here in Denmark :) – but until then I will look into some xCoding (never done that) – and see how well I can port Fruitz to the iPhone / iPod Touch

You are right. An extra hand for coding and security measures would be nice indeed. The backend for Fruitz is made in PHP, so it should be possible to find someone who can help out.

Scores depend a great deal on what version people have. And I’ve been checking some scores, comparing playtime, checks on the server, rollcounts etc. – and found some rotten Fruits ;)
But as I said – this should be up to people for now – I will not play policeman on that part, as it takes way to much time.

  12. great game but i can’t submit my highscore

  13. Demon2k7
Hey there :) You can only submit your highscore from the current beta versions, and not from version 1.2 (the first full release). For more information check out the FAQ section of the Fruitz website, or take a peak in the forum :)
